Hertfordshire Garden

In this case, the building is constructed of brick and flint and has a large garden lying within rolling countryside. I enveloped the space with a mixed, native hedge to give it structure and link it to the landscape beyond.

The sculptor Henry Moore lived and worked nearby. He was heavily influenced by flints found locally and similarly I took flints as the inspiration for making generous sized beds which I held together with a circular brick path running in and out of them.

The planting is immersive and makes you want to wander in an area that was non-descript before. The garden lacked seasonality in terms of variation and colour and generally needed softening so I incorporated a scheme that gave interest year round. As part of this project, I also designed the brick and flint gateposts.
